TO REFINISH OR REPLACE ?

Professionals can refinish bathtubs in any color!

An alternative to replacing, when remodeling your bathroom.

Over the course of years, your bathtub tends to lose its shine becoming hard to keep clean and dingy looking. Maybe you accidentally chipped the enamel or used too harsh, abrasive powdered or liquid cleaners.

There are 2 ways to get a shiny, easy-to-clean tub again:

 1. Repair and refinish your old bathtub (in any custom color) right in your home without removing  anything  except the  drain fixture and over-flow tripper, or the costly alternative;

 2.  Tear out the old tub, part of the surrounding wall and floor tiles, all plumbing, and often part of the bathroom wall in order to get the old tub out. Then install a new tub, repair walls and floor, and re-tile. (Most colors in tiles, if over 15 years old, are discontinued so exact match is quite difficult.)

Many plumbing, remodeling and decorating companies recommend tub and tile refinishing of a bathroom over tearing them out, to save their customers money and time.

Mr. David Powell the author of the "Hidden Bathtub" manual for refinishers and the owner of BATHTUB MAGIC LLC will share a few points that may help you select a bathtub refinishing company that does the job right.

Bathtub Refinishing vs. Bathtub Liners

Bathtub liners are designed to fit over your existing bathtub and walls. Typically made out of vinyl or molded plastic and can be installed in a day. However, the cost versus bathtub refinishing is about $1300 for the bathtub and $3000 if you include the wall surround. The average bathtub-refinishing project is around $290. Bathtub reglazing can save 70% versus the cost of a new liner.

Either a refinished bathtub or bathtub liner should last 7-20 years. This is based on a professionally done installation, proper cleaning and care, and the quality of the products.

Bathtub liners are easily scratched and if a sharp edge touches a bathtub liner, it could be damaged. This is also true with a refinished bathtub. By following the care and cleaning instructions issued by the installer or refinishing company is crucial to the longevity of your fixture.

A poorly installed bathtub liner can end up being a headache for you later on. Bathtub liners tend to leak at the joints, and or at the drains, trapping water between the liner and the old tub. This could create a ‘waterbed’ effect in the bottom of your bathtub and lead to mold under the liner.

When you begin to smell a putrid rotten odor, it most likely is stagnant, moldy  water between the tub liner and old tub and the unit should be torn out at that time.

I have removed these liners before and will never do it again … I recommend then, to replace the bathtub by a licensed contractor.

Professional bathtub refinisher vs. a painter?

A professional refinisher knows exactly how to properly clean, remove hard water film build-up, acid etch and sand the tub before spraying the new finish on your tub. Keep in mind that the bathroom environment is often wet and humid, and the surface must withstand different chemicals to last.

Anyone can spray a bathtub to look shiny and nice for a few months, but the professional tub refinisher knows how to make the new finish last for years to come!

Words of note...

An old cliché that says, if it looks like it's to-good-to-be-true, it probably is.

Seems like a lot of people recently found that truism out in a most painful way.

I have been in this industry for over three decades, following some of the oldest distributors and manufacturers supplying the bathtub refinishing industry.

They know what's new, and proven.

So, I can  only say this--Go with both eyes open when selecting your contractors.

Who does a job that lasts?

Before you hire a refinisher, do some background checking. Call your local plumbing companies. They will know what kind of work the refinisher does.  Also, you may want to call your local Better  Business  Bureau  or the Consumer Affairs and find out about the company's reputation.  Don't be taken in by "Fly-By-Niters" or inexperienced painters, who promise "too-good-to-be-true" prices and guarantees, then move on to new locations.

Why do I have zero before and after pictures on my site?

Because I would have to touch them up to 'look-ugly' and I do not choose to do that.

Call plumbers, contractors, decorators,  etc...  call around.  Then go with your gut.
